About the Filmmaker

|
Claire Darby is an MFA candidate in film and media arts at American University; she is also an award-winning independent filmmaker. Snapshots of a Soldier is her first full-length documentary.
After graduating with a BA from Boston College, Claire spent 5 years working as a social justice organizer, fundraiser and communications specialist on issues like immigration, poverty, and workers’ rights. Claire has a strong interest in the power of film to promote understanding, build connections and effect social change, and she is excited to use documentary filmmaking to bring to light the issues she cares about.
Since moving to Washington, D.C. and starting her degree in 2007, Claire has worked on both documentary and fiction films (winning a TIVA-DC Peer Award for her fiction short PostSecret, and a documentary scriptwriting award for the script of Snapshots). In April of 2008, she co-founded Flat Tire Films, a production company specializing in videos for people who want to be able to maintain and repair their bikes themselves. She has written articles on filmmaking for Dox Magazine, and is currently working as a graduate fellow for AU's Center for Social Media, and as an Associate Producer on Dorst MediaWork's documentary film Shattered Sky.
